The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam has two versions to it – Academic and General Training version. Moreover, it has four modules to it Writing, Listening, Reading and Speaking. The blog here will discuss the Speaking Module, various parts, specifically Part 1.
Various parts of the IELTS Speaking Module
The IELTS Speaking module consists of the following three parts:
Part 1 - Introduction Based Questions
Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking module comprises basic introductory questions and questions based on three topics. These questions ask about your likes and dislikes. It is important to give valid reasons for your answers as each question might have a ‘Why?’ part to it as well. The examiner might ask 9 to 12 questions based on these three different topics. These topics are general. This part lasts for four to five minutes.
Part 2 – Cue Card Topic
Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking module is based on a Cue Card Topic. This topic is again general and the part does not test specific in-depth knowledge of the candidate about this topic. The examiner will hand over a notebook and pencil to the candidate to write notes on. The examiner will also give one minute of preparation time to the candidate to prepare the topic. Then, the candidate is expected to speak on this cue card topic continuously for about two minutes. Therefore, this part of the speaking module will last for three to four minutes.
Part 3 – Discussion Based Questions
Part 3 of the IELTS speaking module will test your ability to do an in-depth discussion on the Cue Card Topic presented to you in Part 2 of the speaking module. This part will comprise four to five questions which will be based on the Cue Card Topic in Part 2 of the speaking exam. The candidate is expected to answer these questions in-depth. They are expected to discuss their opinions and present valid reasons for their opinions in the answers to these questions. The candidate is also expected to answer these questions at length. Part 3 of the speaking module will last for another four to five minutes.
