The reading module contains extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks and guidelines. Given below are some points to be kept in mind before attempting the exam:
- The second module attempted is reading.
- It is a 60 minutes test of your reading skills and you are advised to spend 20 minutes on each section.
- There are three sections in the reading test.
- Each section comprises of a reading passage and 13 to 14 questions. There are 40 questions in total.
- You must write all answers on an answer sheet while reading because there is no extra time for transferring answers.
Type 1: Sentence completion
Task Description: This task requires you to fill gaps in information in the form of fill-ups in sentences that need to be completed using words from the passage.
Type 2: Notes/table/flow chart completion
Task Description: The gaps in Notes/ Table/Flow Chart question type are to be filled with words from the passage.
Type 3: Short answer questions
Task Description: This task requires you to answer questions using words from the passage.
Type 4: Labeling a diagram
Task Description: The parts of a given diagram are filled with information given in the passage.
Type 5: True/False/Not Given
Task Description: This task requires the test taker to decide whether the statement in the question agrees, contradicts or is not given according to the information given in the passage.
Type 6: Yes/No/Not Given
Task Description: One needs to decide whether the given statement in the question agrees or contradicts the writer’s views or claims, or, whether the given information is not in the passage.
Type 7: Global multiple choice
Task Description: One needs to decide the main theme of the passage.
Type 8: Matching
Task Description: One needs to match the given statements with answers in a box.
Type 9: Sentence completion with a box
Task Description: One needs to complete the sentences by selecting correct endings from a box of options.
Type 10: Finding information in paragraphs
Task Description: One needs to find the paragraph that contains the information in the question.
Type 11: Choose correct headings for paragraphs
Task Description: One needs to choose the correct heading for each paragraph from a list of headings.
Type 12: Summary completion
Task Description: One needs to complete the gaps in summary using words from a passage.
IELTS Reading has a total of 40 questions. Each correct answer carries one mark. So, total marks are calculated out of 40. There is no negative marking which means that one is not penalized for an incorrect answer.
