IELTS GENERAL WRITING


  • The writing test is the third part of the final test.
  • It is a 60-minute test of your ability to write in English.
  • The candidate is expected to complete two tasks in 60 minutes. The task 2 is worth more marks so, it is important to try to keep the recommended timing for each part.
  • Task 1(about 20 minutes) is a letter writing. The letter can be formal, informal or semi –formal.
  • Task 2(about 40 minutes) is a discursive essay of 250 words in response to a question or argument on a general topic.
  • Both tasks are mandatory to attempt.

Marking Criteria

Task 1 Marking criteria

Task 1 in General training is a letter. To get a high band score in Task 1, it should fulfill the following four criteria.

  • Task Achievement

The letter should be 150 – 180 words long.

The letter should explain all the bullet points in the question.

The letter should highlight all key features.

  • Lexical Resources

The letter should include a range of words that are correctly placed and used.

The letter should use collocations.

The words in the letter should be spelled correctly.

  • Coherence and Cohesion

The letter should be well paragraphed.

The letter should judiciously use linking words or connectors.

  • Grammar Range and Accuracy

The letter should have a range of sentence structures.

The letter should use correct tenses.

The letter should use correct punctuation.

Example

Write a letter in no less than 150-180 words.

You have eaten at a restaurant and it was such a terrible experience that you have decided to inform the manager by writing a letter explaining what happened, and that you want your money back.

Points to include while structuring your letter are:

  • Give facts: You need to be concise but at the same time fully explain the situation.
  • Outline what action is required
  • Remember to be assertive but not rude

To get a good band score, the above letter should comprise the following features:

  • 150-180 words in length.
  • Answer the given bullet points.
  • Use correct tense to frame your answer and use a range of sentence structures.
  • The letter should be intelligently paragraphed.
  • Use a range of words accurately around the given topic.
  • Use a number of connectors.
  • Use correct spellings and punctuation.

Task 2 Marking Criteria

Task 2 in General training is an essay. To score a high band in Task 2, it should fulfill the following four criteria.

  • Task Response

The essay should answer the question.

It should have relevant points supported with examples.

An opinion should be provided where asked.

It should have a conclusion.

  • Lexical Resources

The essay should include a range of words that are correctly placed and used.

It should use collocations.

The words in the essay should be spelled correctly.

  • Coherence and Cohesion

The essay should be well paragraphed.

It should judiciously use linking words or connectors.

Each paragraph should have a central idea.

  • Grammar Range and Accuracy

The essay should have a range of sentence structures.

Use correct tenses and punctuation where required.

Example

Write an essay in no less than 250-280 words.

Some people believe that teaching children at home is best for a child’s development while others think that it is important for children to go to school.

Discuss the advantages of both methods and given your opinion.

To get a good band score, the above essay should adhere to the following features:

  • The minimum length should be 250 words which can extend to 280 words.
  • Each paragraph should have a central meaning.
  • Use connectors that link ideas in paragraphs.
  • Use relevant and supporting examples.
  • Give advantages of both methods.
  • Quote your opinion on the topic.
  • Use vocabulary relevant to the topic.
  • Use different grammatical structures.
  • Use correct spellings and punctuation.
  • Do not use short forms and contractions.
