TOEFL Reading Section

All administrations of the TOEFL internet-based test (iBT) include a reading section that consists of three or four reading passages, each with 12-14 questions. There are a total of ten question types.
Comprehension
How well you read and comprehend texts from an academic setting is evaluated in the TOEFL Reading section. Each passage of about 700 words. Answering all of the section's questions will take you between 54 and 72 minutes.
These ten types are grouped by ETS into two broad categories:
  • Basic information and inferencing questions
  • Reading-to-learn questions.
Factual information; vocabulary questions; inference questions; rhetorical purpose questions; insert text questions; negative factual information questions; reference questions; sentence simplification questions.
Basic Information and Inferencing Questions
This includes only two types of reading-to-learn questions; prose summary and fill-in a table
Reading-to-Learn Questions
Reading passages are excerpts from university-level textbooks that would be used in introductions to a topic. The passages cover a variety of subjects. All the information you need to answer the questions will be included in the passage.
