Permanent Residency in Canada is a point-based immigration system. Points are awarded for each component like age, education, experience etcetera. One such component is English language proficiency.
A globally accepted English proficiency test for this purpose is the IELTS General Training exam, which evaluates your English using every day, non-academic language.
Accepted version
To be eligible for permanent residency through Express Entry, candidates must have a language proficiency score of CLB 7, or an IELTS score of at least 6.0 overall.
Minimum requirement
To be a lawyer, a minimum score of 7.0 in each section of the IELTS is required.
For lawyers
To be a nurse, you need a minimum overall score of 6.5 and 7.0 for Speaking.
For nurses
For NOC A jobs, the minimum language requirement is CLB 7. For NOC B jobs, the requirement is CLB 5.
